Community Wildfire Protection Plan developed for south Thurston County

Western Washington traditionally experiences fewer wildfires than the drier east side of the state. But past experiences are no guarantee of future behaviors. Today, wildfire is a concern to any county that has forests, grasslands, pastures, meadows, or even wetlands. Thurston County has experienced multiple significant wildfires in the last 6-8 years. Most fires resulted from lightning, arson, or accidents – accidents usually stem from campfires or outdoor burn piles, discarded cigarettes, or mishandled fireworks.

As such, Thurston Conservation District has developed a draft South Thurston Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP). The CWPP addresses the causes of fire and outlines means of reducing or eliminating many of the threats facing the community.

Thurston Conservation District welcomes public feedback on the draft CWPP. Comments may be submitted online.
