Asbestos: Still in use and still of concern

It’s pretty commonly understood that asbestos is a dangerous health hazard. Yet what’s not well understood is that the mineral can still be found in new products throughout the United States, and the world.

While that will change in the coming years (EPA bans ongoing uses of asbestos – ORCAA) we must still deal with the fact that asbestos may be present in ANY building regardless of age. As such, ORCAA maintains a strict, but easy-to-use, notification process for demolition or renovation projects. These notifications require asbestos surveys, and if asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) are found, an asbestos notification must also be completed.

A recent presentation to the ORCAA Board of Directors also provides additional details about asbestos, the history of its regulation, and ORCAA’s role in managing asbestos-related projects. Find that presentation here: Asbestos: What it is, and why it is regulated
