Air Quality Alert issued for Thurston & Mason Counties

An unfortunate convergence of weather and fire has resulted in wildfire smoke settling into the communities of Mason and Thurston Counties this weekend.

The Bear Gulch Fire in Mason County – burning since early July – has rapidly expanded in size. That growth, combined with weather patterns that push the fire’s smoke into surface-level airsheds, has created air quality impacts this weekend.

The National Weather Service, in coordination with the state Department of Ecology, the state Department of Natural Resources, and ORCAA, has issued an Air Quality Advisory (AQA) for Thurston and Mason Counties. The AQA remains in effect through Saturday night, Sept. 20, 2025. The AQA notice states:

An Air Quality Alert has been issued for Mason and Thurston County through Saturday, June 20, 2025, due to current wildfire smoke. Particulate matter (PM2.5) levels are at Unhealthy levels. Health Impacts and Recommended Actions: When air quality is Unhealthy, everyone should reduce exposure. Limit time outside, avoid strenuous outdoor activity, and follow tips for cleaner indoor air.

Smoke is expected to impact communities from the lower Puget Sound up the Hood Canal area to near Brinnon. Part of eastern Grays Harbor County may also be impacted.

Visit the Fire and Smoke Map for updated information on the wildfires and air quality conditions.
