Ways to Drive Clean
You can reduce air pollution by the driving choices you make
You can reduce air pollution from your car or truck by driving less. Ways to drive less include:
- Car pooling
- Walking or riding a bike
- Shopping by phone or mail
- Riding public transit
- Telecommuting
When you do drive, you can reduce air pollution by:
- Accelerating gradually
- Using cruise control where possible
- Obeying the speed limit
- Combining tasks into one trip
- Keeping your car maintained and inspected on time
- If your "Check Engine Light" comes on, have your vehicle checked by a an Emission Repair Technician
- Don't top off at the gas pumps
- Replacing your car's air filter when due
- Keeping your tires properly inflated
- DON'T IDLE: If stopped for more than 30 seconds, turn off your ignition. It's better for your engine and it saves gas! Remember: Idling = 0 miles per gallon!
And, if you have to drive on days when air quality is poor, only drive your newest car since newer cars generally pollute less than older models, and limit your driving as much as possible.

- Avoid carrying unneeded items in the trunk - (i.e. keep the car's weight down).
- Go easy on the brakes and gas pedal - smooth accelerations and easy braking increase your car's efficiency.
- Drive your car wisely and maintain it properly.
- Use your air conditioning only when necessary
- Use overdrive.
- Get regular engine tune-ups and car maintenance checks.
- Keep your tires properly inflated.
